Miguel Gonçalves Mendes and "The Meaning of Life"

Times are quarrelsome. Spain and Italy are the new summer acquisitions of Europe's nearly-bankrupt top 10. London tailors the last fabrics for the Games and sunks into a new banking scandal with Barclays. Austerity smothers the entire continent, unemployment plummets and the Euro coin is grasping unsteadily for borrowed oxygen. In Portugal, amidst grimmer waters, cultural policies meet no purpose, strategy or honorable agents and the subsidies for cinema are physical phenomenons that are either frozen by the Government or evaporate in thin air by the hands of (mostly, not totally) amateur filmmaking.


This is where Miguel Gonçalves Mendes comes in. After the successful José and Pilar, he is starting a new film, The Meaning of Life, launched in an online crowdfunding platform called I Want to Discover the Meaning of Life. Website, interviews and detailed information is available in Portuguese only but it promises to go international as soon as the infra-structures allow it. www.sentidodavida.sapo.pt is not a general fundraising site like Indie GoGo or Kickstarter as it features personalized financing models based on case-studies like The Tunnel or Iron Sky: you can buy frames of the movie, get your face in a specific sequence of the movie, be an actual co-producer, etc.

The synopsis reads as "A young man finds out he has a disease which he may not survive and decides to travel around the world by car, crossing paths with seven archetypal characters and their views on life and its purpose. Those would be a writer, an actor, a filmmaker, a singer, a politician, an atheist and on top of it an astronaut.". The names were not revealed yet as conversations and contracts are still on the table.

"José e Pilar", na versão Director's Cut

O filme português na versão muito alargada (cinco horas) de Director's Cut, depois de uma boa, importante e muito relevante campanha de promoção nos Estados Unidos aquando da corrida aos Óscares. "City of God" director, Fernando Meirelles, praises "José and Pilar"

Fernando Meirelles, best known for his moving depiction of the Brazilian slums in City of God (Oscar nominee for Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Editing), who has recently presented his new feature 360 at the Toronto Film Festival, talked a fifty-second video praising the Portuguese documentary José and Pilar. Credited as one of the executive producers (the others being Miguel Gonçalves Mendes and Pedro Almodóvar), says he is proud.

"José and Pilar" is the Portuguese candidate for Best Foreign Picture: why is it the wisest choice

José and Pilar, the documentary on the Nobel Prize for Literature laureate José Saramago, was picked by the commission appointed by the Portuguese Institute of Cinema as the Portuguese candidate for Best Foreign Picture to the Academy's consideration until the official announcement of the nominees for the Oscars 2012, on January 24th.

Now, why is it the wisest choice ?


- Universality: José Saramago is a Nobel Prize winner who sold millions of books and had them translated into 42 languages. He is also a huge example of the rare successful thrivings of the Portuguese culture in the Anglo-Saxon market and society.

- Has power and influence to reach the Academy: it is co-produced by Pedro Almodóvar and Fernando Meirelles, both members of the Academy and recognized filmmakers who either won or were nominated for Oscars.

- Critical and viewers acclaim: got very good reviews wherever it has already been (even in Variety, although it is still to premiere in the US) and gathered the most tender and positive comments by the public worldwide.

- Will race for Academy's Best Documentary: it will go through the the qualifying run for the category, providing the US distributors with a chance of a synergy of promotion for both candidatures, beneficing of somewhat like a "mutual pressure".

- Worldwide premiering: has premiered in Portugal, Brasil, Spain and Italy and will premiere in Mexico, US and Canada.

- Made people care: even if just a little, even if still a vast minority, it made people actually discuss Portuguese cinema - which should be the right choice for the Portuguese representation. People don't care about Portuguese cinema but this time there were those who wanted to give their symbolical support by signing a petition about the film. And then it is all over the national news while last year I can only remember three lines in a newspaper about "To Die Like a Man.

- Outsiders: the Academy also goes for films that break their traditional patterns and expectations - "Dogtooth" (2010) is thematically and aesthetically though and risky; "Waltz with Bashir" (2009) is a fake documentary animation; "12" (2008) is a foreign remake of an American classic; "Paradise Now", attributed to the Occupied Palestinian Territories; "The Red Balloon" (1956), a short film which won Best Original Screenplay. The time would come when a documentary would make it to Best Foreign nominee.

Still manages to sound like fiction: as many reviewers wrote, it "ends with the illusion of the pure documentary", and shows you people that suddenly are fascinating characters who you follow in a very nice adaptation of a traditional narrative to a documentary. After the fic-doc, what about the doc-fic ?

And because, personally, is one of the greatest Portuguese pieces I've ever watched.

O filme estreou esta semana em Itália e estreará, ainda em Setembro, no México. Já garantiu distribuição nos EUA e no Canadá.

Miguel Mendes lifts the ambitions

Miguel Gonçalves Mendes, whose intention of adapting José Saramago's The Gospel According to Jesus Christ was officially revealed yesterday, maybe be down to something trully ambitious, within a cinematic culture smeared by wails of poverty and arty films.

As far as the boat threatens to go, I still don't know if we can speak of a Portuguese film. We're talking of big budget with international co-production, an international screenwriter to go for the rewriting and a major international cast and crew, just like Blindness, by the Brazilian Fernando Meirelles, got Don McKellar (writer), Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Gael Garcia Bernal.

Miguel G. Mendes takes the wheel of The Gospel According to Jesus Christ

Miguel Gonçalves Mendes spent four years with Nobel Prize for Literature winner José Saramago and his wife, Pilar del Rio, times out of which he shaped one of the most beautiful, complete and sensitive films the Portuguese cinema has ever seen. That is José and Pilar, a 125-minute documentary that strewed all over the world in film festivals and that has recently inspired a popular movement asking the Portuguese Institute of Cinema to pick it up for the country's submission for the Academy Awards' Best Foreign Movie categorie.

Although in film one shall never consider the closing of a cycle, for each film sprawls itself throughout the history, this project is actually coming to a point of recognized accomplishment and well deserved sense of fulfillment. And within the next months, because we still have to wait to see how it goes (if it goes) in the other side of the Atlantic, it is time for new adventures.


"It is the most cinematic of José Saramago's novels, the one with the adequate structure for film." states Miguel seconds after announcing he's preparing the adaptation of The Gospel According to Jesus Christ in a production with an international cast and crew, still unannounced.

"This film is about how cruel the mankind can reach, whether it is because of power, money, relationships or some god.". Among the other homonyms adaptations of the writers work we count George Sluizer's La Balsa de Piedra (2002), Meirelles' Blindness (2008) and António Ferreira's Embargo (2010).

José e Pilar, de Miguel Gonçalves Mendes, foi o documentário português mais visto de sempre e o filme português mais visto do ano. A isto se junta a boa recepção junto da crítica nacional e internacional e do público, sempre afável e carinhoso para com o filme. Pessoalmente, considero-o uma das melhores peças já produzidas pelo nosso cinema.

Portugal detém o recorde de maior número de submissões ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro sem qualquer nomeação. Nos últimos anos, a Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas norte-americana tem revelado uma abertura maior a nível internacional, pelo que achamos que José e Pilar seria a escolha ideal: co-produção entre a JumpCut, a O2 (de Fernando Meirelles) e a El Deseo (de Pedro Almodóvar), com uma figura internacional reconhecida e acarinhada - José Saramago, o primeiro Nobel da Literatura português - teve muito sucesso na bilheteira e crítica do nosso país, recebeu nomeações na Academia Brasileira de Cinema, em festivais internacionais e recebeu excelentes críticas da Variety, Cahiers du Cinema, entre outras.

Foi hoje mesmo lançada uma petição online que tem o objectivo de recolher o máximo número de assinaturas possível para ser apresentada ao ICA (Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual), que deverá escolher qual o filme português a ser candidato a uma nomeação para Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro.

Comemora-se hoje um ano da morte do brilhante escritor português, José Saramago. Não percam a sessão de homenagem na Cinemateca, com a projecção do documentário José e Pilar, de Miguel Gonçalves Mendes, com a presença do realizador e de Pilar del Rio e ainda o lançamento oficial do DVD e CD da banda-sonora do filme em todas as FNAC do país. Ao mesmo tempo, foi anunciada, para 2012, a publicação do seu último e inacabado romance, sobre tráfico de armas, Alabardas, Alabardas! Espingardas, Espingardas! e ainda de um conjunto de correspondência com os seus leitores, Palavras para José Saramago.

Em jeito de curiosidade, e mais um aspecto que não conhecia e passei a admirar no autor, cortesia d'O Sétimo Continente, deixo alguns dos seus filmes favoritos: Blade Runner (Ridley Scott), Volver (Pedro Almodóvar), Amarcord (Federico Fellini), La Régle du Jeu (Jean Renoir), entre outros.

"José e Pilar" amanha na Cinemateca; DVD e CD

É já amanhã, dia 18 de Junho (Sábado), que se comemora o ano da morte de José Saramago, numa comemoração que se quer tão digna e marcante quanto o seu próprio Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis. A partir das 14h30 de amanhã, poderão comprar na bilheteira da Cinemateca Portuguesa os bilhetes para o filme (que variam numa escala entre 1,25€ e 2,5€), que passará no auditório principal às 21h30, que darão ainda acesso à festa oficial na discoteca LUX, na mesma noite. Paralelamente, e pelo mesmo propósito, dá-se o lançamento do DVD e da Banda-Sonora oficiais do filme nas FNAC de todo o país, este último contando com inéditas reflexões proferidas pelo próprio José Saramago.

Saramago apenas começou a escrever aos sessenta anos e, desde então, lançou mais de trinta livros e foi condecorado com o prémio máximo na área da literatura, o Prémio Nobel em 1998. Aqui, corremos pelos últimos anos da vida de um dos mais importantes autores da história da lusofonia e antes andássemos apenas, pois tudo passa demasiado rápido - quem era, afinal, o homem por trás de tão sagazes parábolas, por trás do sensacionalismo da imprensa na sua aguda relação com a vida política portuguesa ? Miguel Mendes leva-nos até Lanzarote, à sua casa e biblioteca, traz-nos a Lisboa e à Azinhaga, leva-nos a Madrid e à Finlândia, enfim, uma série de rotas, como a que escrevia na altura: A Viagem do Elefante ("Sempre chegamos ao sítio onde nos esperam."). A sua relação com Pilar, seu grande suporte para a vida e para a escrita, a quem dedica tudo, faz todo o sentido - a cumplicidade, a admiração mútua, a coordenação de esforços, a paixão pelos ideais e a incessante discussão ordenada entre eles e para com o mundo. A naturalidade das conversas, dos olhares e das reflexões (belíssimas !) são captadas com exímia sensibilidade e os enquadramentos intrigados e a montagem narrativa tornam José e Pilar duas personagens de uma ficção real, com direito a plot conjunto e a um subplot para cada um deles. O filme, co-produção com a O2 de Fernando Meireles ("Cidade de Deus") e a El Deseo de Augustín e Pedro Almodóvar ("Habla Con Ella"), teve estreia comercial em Espanha, Brasil e em Portugal bateu o record de tempo de filmes portugueses em sala: cinco meses. Não hesito em afirmar que é uma das melhores peças que o nosso cinema já produziu.
